How To Build A Wine Cellar In The Basement

A wine cellar has three primary requirements. It should protect the wine from heat, light, and dry environment. Preferred place for a wine cellar is a dark and cold room with just the right percentage of humidity. If you are thinking of building one in your house, then the basement is the best suited place for that. It adds value to your house and is a great style statement also. First of all make your basement wine-friendly. This means getting proper insulation installed. This will keep the temperatures inside the basement from fluctuating a lot along with the outside temperatures. A cold environment is very essential for a wine cellar.
 
Next step, get an air conditioner fixed in the basement. This is because even though the walls around the basement (ground) will keep it unaffected from outside temperature, it will also prevent heat from escaping the cellar. So if by any unlucky chance, the temperature inside does rise, it will be good to have an air conditioner to save the wine from going bad. Wine should be kept at 49-56 degrees Fahrenheit.
 
If you live in a place where the climate is usually dry, then invest in a humidifier. This will keep the humidity in the basement in check. Dry weather causes the cork in the bottle to shrink, thus letting air inside the bottle.
 
For storing the wine, you can either go for a normal wrought iron rack, or a contemporary wooden rack. You can keep separate racks for different wines so that its easy to choose when the time comes.
 
If racks are not your style, then you can have special wooden boxes made to measure and keep the bottles in there.
