How to Clean Kitchen Countertops

A kitchen countertop bears the brunt of most of the household work, as it is the busiest part of the house. You use it continuously, to prepare breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Keeping it clean is of paramount importance as a dirty countertop is bound to invite health trouble. You don't want insects and rats roaming around your kitchen, leaving their mark on everything. So here are some ways of keeping it clean and sparkling all the time.

The easiest way to clean a kitchen countertop is to take a piece of cloth and moisten it with water to wipe it. You can also use a moist sponge instead of cloth.

For stubborn dirt and stains which simply refuse to come off easily, use warm water and add a few drops of liquid dish-washing detergent to it. Dip a sponge or a soft cloth in this solution and then try to wipe the countertop. Soaking the stain in this solution for sometime (by sprinkling the solution on it) will do wonders.

Another great way of removing stains is to use baking soda on them. Use a moist sponge or cloth and sprinkle some baking soda on it before wiping the countertop.

However, make sure that after you are done cleaning it with the solution of your choice, you wipe the countertop dry. This reduces chances of the solution leaving behind stains of its own. Damp countertop also encourages bacteria and mold's growth.

If your countertop is made of marble or granite, then special care is needed. Their surface is smooth and they are very sensitive and prone to scratches, so use an ultra soft sponge or cloth. Also, avoid using harsh cleaning agents on them.

Special cleaning agents for kitchen countertops are available in market which can be used on most types of materials. However, you can make your own cleaning solution at home, by mixing lemon juice and salt in water. You can also use chlorine bleach if the stains are excessively horrible.
