How To Decorate A Porch

A front porch is one of the most appealing areas of a home, especially if it is comfortable, inviting, and well decorated. It is a place where people often read the morning paper while enjoying the cool breezes of fall. During warmer months, you'll most likely spend lots of time entertaining friends and relaxing on your sun porch. The front porch is also a place to sit back and relax while taking in fresh air and observing outdoor activities. The front porch and how it is decorated says a lot about your character and taste. This part of the house is a "welcome sign" telling the community you are friendly and inviting neighbors to drop by for some morning coffee and a chat or for afternoon some iced tea. A tastefully decorated front porch makes you seem more approachable and reveals a little peep of your decorating taste inside your home. A well decorated front porch is friendly, and it provides countless ways to creatively welcome in seasons and special occasions. Here are some tips and guidelines which will help you to decorate your porch and make it a soothing as well as an attractive place.

Before decorating a porch for any season or holiday, it is important to sweep away dirt, webs, debris, and wayward leaves on a regular basis. Removing layers of dirt and grime and sweeping away debris is the first step in decorating a porch for any season or occasion, and as a result it will look more welcoming than ever.

You can do an amazing decorating job just by using color. Try painting the front door. The front door can serve as a focal point or it can be used to telegraph your decorating color scheme for the rest of the porch. Depending on the overall statement you want, that is, bold, trendy, subtle, or somewhere in between, choose a color that will complement that look. Then you might choose another complementary or contrasting color to go with that.

An outdoor porch that is used regularly must have comfortable seating and side tables to be truly relaxing and inviting. Add seating options using white wicker furniture. Buy a love seat and a chair set. Use soft floral-patterned cushions for comfort. Seating has to be decorative, functional, durable, comfortable and, most of all, easy to sit in and get out of.

The sweet natural scent of flower arrangements or potted flowers, coupled with their array of color, cheerfully brightens up the neighborhood. Container plants that bear fruit such as strawberries may be placed on the porch as a big draw for the visiting neighborhood children.

You can also use wind chimes to decorate the porch. They make inviting sounds as they tinkle and chime in the breeze. Wind chimes come in many styles, colors and sizes to fit all tastes and are inexpensive. They're easy to fix to the ceiling of the front porch, in most cases involving just a nail or a screw. Colored bird feeders are also an ornate addition to your porch decor.

Cast a warm glow across the porch during evening get-togethers using soft lighting options. Hang antique wrought-iron or Chinese lanterns, and place candles on tables. You can also string delicate white lights from windows and doorways.

Bamboo roll-up blinds attached to the porch overhang are ideal for blocking out most of the sun when it's too low and shines directly in the residents eyes. When the blinds are down, they allow chinks of light to shine through. This cuts down on the sun's glare. Bamboo blinds look attractive, can be rolled up or down, and are easy to install.
