How To Keep A Christmas Tree Green And Fresh

Come December and the hunt for a perfect Christmas tree begins. Though these days artificial trees are available, they take up a lot of space storage wise. So once you buy that tree to make your family holiday perfect, you will have to take care of it also. To make sure that the tree stays green for a longer period of time, follow these simple steps. Share pictures of your decorated trees and write your own tips to keep them green by leaving a comment at the end of the guide.

Place the freshly cut tree on a stand which will act as a small water reservoir at its base. It is very important to keep it in water otherwise it will not take long for the tree to wilt away. The tree will use up almost a gallon of water in the first 24 hours, and several pints thereafter every day.

If for some reason the freshly cut tree has not been placed in water within the first 12 hours, then you will need to take care of it immediately. Cut a ½ inch disc from the base of the trunk and then place it in water so that the tree can ‘drink up’ easily.

Though keeping a tree in water more than solves our purpose, you can also prolong the life of the tree by adding preservation agents to the water. Though there is no concrete evidence that adding anything to the water will help the tree stay fresh longer, there are still some families who swear by these home-remedies. Most popular among these remedies are adding vodka, aspirin, sugar, salt, or corn soup.

Keep the tree away from the windows as direct sunlight will dry the leaves more quickly. The needles of the tree will get brittle and the heat will reduce the life of the tree.

Keep the tree in a secluded corner of your living room which is away from the central heating system. The heat, as is the case with sunlight, brings down the longitivity of the tree. That is why they should be placed in cool areas away from drafts and potential sources of warm air like fireplaces, heaters, furnace vents or television sets.

Christmas trees do not cause fires, but they should be handled to prevent being placed near sources of ignition. The electronic decorations used on it should be in good working condition. They should also not generate a lot of heat. Switch off these decorative lights before leaving the house or going to bed.

Your Christmas tree will never wilt! That is of course if you decide to buy an artificial tree. Or a greener and less-cruel way would be to have a permanent Christmas tree in your garden. Buy a large earthenware pot and plant a Christmas tree in it with all its roots intact. Now all you have to do each year is bring that pot in during Christmas and decorate it. When the festivities end, you can simply put the tree out in the garden again.
