How To Maintain A Barbecue Grill

Summer is the season for barbecues. Whenever there is a get-together with friends and relatives, there's a party and celebrations on a warm day. But after having had that great day at the grill, you have to maintain it in order to maximize it's longevity. Here are some tips on how to maintain your barbecue grill.

Rub the grill with oil and onion. After purchasing your grill, rub the grate, the rack which touches the food, with vegetable oil and half an onion. Giving the grill a generous coat will ensure your food doesn't stick to the grate.

You can also use barbecue liners made of aluminum while cooking. You can put it on top of the grill. This will help prevent sticking of meat that you are grilling as well as help prevent dripping of sauce and oil.

Preheat the grill properly. When grills are properly preheated, it will prevent the meat from sticking. After you've used your grill and it has built up a significant amount of charbroiled residue, heat your grill. The grate will always be easier to clean when hot.

Scrape while you cook. Remove the meat that is stuck on the grill before it gets burned. It will prevent it from sticking too hard to the surface. If you scrape it with a strong steel brush the meat will lift easily. Using a long-handled, brass-bristled brush, scrub the grill grate. The charbroiled residue should fall away into the fire of the grill.

Clean the grill after every use. If you have the habit of cleaning it after every use or when it is still hot then it makes it easier to get rid of the sticky material.

Sometimes when you grill, the amount of sauce and oil coming from the food can spill through the grill, which if unattended can cause the flame to flare up. This is not only hazardous, but can also cause damage to your grill. If you put a dripping pan under the grill and empty it every now and then as you cook, it can prevent flare ups and keep your grill in good condition.

Wash the grate periodically through the season; it's a good idea to wash your grate with a wet soapy sponge. Then take a second sponge that is not soapy, and repeat the process. The reason for the second sponge is that because of the grid on the grate, it's important to make sure there is no additional soap residue in the cracks and crevasses.
