How To Maintain A Microwave Oven

A microwave oven is the most important appliance in our kitchen. But  if you take a good look at your microwave, you will find it is the most overlooked appliance when it comes to regular cleaning and maintenance. Here are few simple steps you can take to clean and maintain your microwave.

Clean the interior of your microwave oven after every use. This prevents splatters from building up on the oven walls or floor. Because these food particles continue to absorb microwaves when the oven is in use, they can result in burns to the interior.

Check the accuracy of the oven's thermostat with an oven thermometer. If the difference is small, compensate by setting the dial higher or lower than called for by the recipe. A large difference means you need to have the thermostat replaced. A broken thermostat can cause the oven temperature to raise high enough to char food in a few minutes.

Use a spray bottle filled with club soda to wipe up the grease and spills in your microwave. Spray the inside of the microwave with the club soda and wipe it off with a wet towel. Dry the inside of the microwave with a paper towel. Do this once a week to keep your microwave clean. Do not forget to unplug the oven while doing this.

Check the oven door for food particles or spills. These can build up in the hinges or around the edges, preventing the door from sealing properly when closed.

Cut three lemons into thin slices and place them in a microwave safe bowl. Add a cup of water to the bowl and microwave it for five minutes. This will remove any old food odors from the inside of your microwave and leave it smelling fresh and clean.

Use the self-cleaning feature. Most spills will be turned to ash, which you can wipe clean with only a damp sponge. Make sure to turn the range hood fan on to remove any smoke or fumes created during the self-cleaning process. Ensure that all oven cleaner liquid has been rinsed away before cooking in the oven again.

Use glass cleaner to clean the oven's window after every use so food stains don't build up, making it difficult to see through the window.

Vinegar is another solution to clean your microwave. Just fill a microwave-safe bowl with a mixture of half vinegar and half water, and nuke it for two minutes. Then, dip a sponge into the vinegar-water solution, and use it to wipe the food off of the walls of the microwave. It'll fall right off. The only care that should be taken is that the vinegar-water solution will be very hot after heating. So always wear gloves to protect your hands.

A microwave oven is probably the most dangerous of all common household appliances. A severe shock can occur even if the oven is unplugged. As with all household items, maintenance is helpful and will increase the life-span of the oven. Most repairs, however, should be left to professionals.
