How To Maintain Vacuum Cleaners

Vacuum cleaners play a vital role in your 'cleaning the house' process. It removes the contaminants and allergens from the air in your house and also increases the longevity of your furniture and upholstery. A vacuum cleaner doesn't need any special attention, but simple care and maintenance will keep it working as efficient as possible. You can also avoid costly repairs and part or machine replacements to a great extent. Here are some simple maintenance tips for your vacuum cleaner.

Before starting any maintenance process, make sure that the vacuum cleaner is unplugged. Leaving the appliance connected during cleaning can be very hazardous and may result in injuries or electrical shocks.

Check the bag each time you vacuum and change it when it is half full. If the bag is full, then the cleaner will not have the required space for air circulation, and will not work efficiently. This will also affect the motor. Thus, it is necessary to clean the bags regularly.

Clean or change the vacuum cleaner filters as instructed by the manufacturer. Clogged filters may reduce the cleaning efficiency of the vacuum cleaner. To capture fine dust particles, use high efficiency bags and filters.

Clean the brush rolls regularly. This is a spinning brush underneath that brushes dirt out of carpets. Dirt and grime can accumulate on the bearings, which impedes movement and puts excessive strain on the motor. Brush rolls are easy to replace and makes a real difference in cleaning results.

Check the belt for signs of wear, and replace it if it is worn. A loose or worn belt will not allow the brush roll to work properly. Buy a new belt, if your old belt is cracked or clogged.

In bagless vacuum cleaners, there are reusable or disposable filters which should be cleaned and replaced regularly. You can use the solution of mild detergent and water to clean the filters. Air-dry the filter before replacing it.

Make sure the cord is tightly attached to the vacuum cleaner, and there are no cuts and tears on the surface. A worn cord is an electrical hazard, and must be replaced immediately by a professional. Also, check the body of the vacuum cleaner for any damages.

With a soft cloth, wipe over the entire body of the vacuum cleaner and remove the accumulated dirt on it. You can also follow some other safety precautions like avoiding wet areas if you have a dry vacuum cleaner, avoiding large and hard pieces of clutter and having your vacuum cleaner serviced regularly.
