Check whether the damage is structural or cosmetic in nature. Structural damages are very easy to repair rather than cosmetic damages
 
If the cabinet damage is structural where the wood has cracked or perished away you can get a new piece of wood of same size and stick on the damaged surface either with glue or nail. Calling a carpenter for this "dutchman" job will require you to pay $30-80 depending upon the rates in your vicinity.
 
If your cabinet is a painted one then you can smooth the new wood piece with a sandpaper before applying a paint. This will help in making the wood piece to look like the remaining cabinet.
 
You can also use an epoxy wood repair kit which will help you to fill the vacant damaged surface of the cabinet. In case you are planning to paint the surface to match with the original cabinet color epoxy wood repair will give you good results.
 
In case you have used some sort of adhesives to join two broken areas let the glue dry out completely before applying sandpaper or paint.
 
If your cabinet is placed in your living room then any visibility of a crack may hurt your reputation. You can buy plastic wood filler for better, smother finish. Plastic wood fillers are available in like like concentration which can easily be applied to the damaged areas.
 
Let the cabinet dry in sunlight before usage. Make sure the area you have repaired is strong enough to hold the household necessities and looking good.
