How To Save Electrical Energy At Home

With the world crying hoarse over depleting energy sources and its effect on global warming, everyone is talking about measures to conserve energy on large scale. However, as they say, "Charity starts at home." Taking some simple steps in saving electrical energy at home is very helpful in bringing about a major change.

Lets start at the basics. Switch off the room's light's, fan, air conditioner, heater etc when you leave the room. It only takes a second to do these things and the energy saved through this method can add up to a lot.

One way of achieving this without troubling yourself too much is to install motion-sensing lights. They switch on when someone walks into the room and automatically switch off when you walk out.

Heres another simple way. If you are reading a book, your brother is taking a nap and your mother is cutting vegetables, then all three of you can stay in one room instead of three different rooms to do your chores. This way, only one room's heater or fan or light is used.

Use CFLs (compact fluorescent lamps) instead of bulbs or tube light. The cost of CFLs have come down these days and they work for a longer period of time than the conventional light-giving sources. Plus it consumes less electricity and are light on pocket in the long run.

Use sunlight to maximum extent. Avoid switching the light on during day time. Open the windows or pull back the curtains to enjoy unlimited and free light while the sun shines.

Make intelligent choices while buying electrical appliances such as refrigerators or washing machines. These days most companies give an "energy consumption star" which indicates the amount of energy a particular appliance will consume and its efficiency, so that a buyer can purchase the best deal. The difference in price between these products and those which do not have certification is almost insignificant. So you might as well buy the one which saves energy.

It is advisable to unplug televisions, music systems, mobile chargers, laptops or personal computers from the main socket instead of keeping them on standby mode. It is believed that 15% electricity is consumed by such products when they are on stand-by mode.

Make sure that you service your thermostat or air conditioner regularly so that it uses energy efficiently.
