How To Save Energy In The Kitchen

Believe it or not, kitchen is the most important part of your house, you cook your food here after all! We use all kinds of energy and resources in our kitchen, for instance, L.P.G (a non-renewable petroleum resource), electricity and water. A survey done by the US government indicates that kitchen alone accounts for 15 percent of the total energy used in a house. Here are some simple tips to help you reduce your energy consumption while making that delicious recipe of yours. Share your ideas with us about this topic by leaving a comment.

If you are using LPG to cook on a daily basis, then you can follow some simple tips to make it last longer. For example, if you take a dish out from the refrigerator and wish to heat it before eating it, then we advice you to wait for 10-15 minutes to allow its temperature to rise up to normal room temperature. This way, you can save on gas spent in heating it if its too cold.

Make intelligent cooking choices. Take for example the case of boiling potato. If you do it in a vessel on a cooking stove, then you are spending non-renewable energy (LPG). If however, you were to use the microwave to do the same, then you will be saving on time and energy, because microwave uses electrical energy. And let’s face it, we will continue to get electricity for a lot longer time than we can expect the oil and natural gas reserves of the world to last.

Select your cooking devices with utmost care. Electrical appliances such as refrigerators, microwaves and food processors should be bought after doing proper research as to which one will consume less electricity. The “energy consumption guide” that comes with most of the electrical appliances these days – which indicates their efficiency – can help you in deciding.

Maintain your kitchen appliances in good condition and service them regularly. Sometimes though it is wise to buy a new appliance altogether rather than using an old and battered one which will not work efficiently.

For the most efficient use of energy, keep both the refrigerator and freezer full. If you don't have enough food to fill the space, then keeping bottles of water on the doors to act as insulators is a good idea. Don’t keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold. Recommended temperatures are 37 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you have one, then increase the use of a pressure cooker. It saves a lot of energy. For other cooking pots, cover it while cooking in it, which prevents heat loss. Moreover, do take care that you are buying the right sized pots for your hot-plate or gas stove.

On gas stoves, it's important to notice the color of your flame. If it's burning more yellow than blue, the gas is not burning efficiently, meaning more gas is consumed for inefficient results. Get it serviced immediately.
