Thanksgiving Craft Activities For Kids

With Thanksgiving approaching, one of the best ways to keep kids engaged in creative work is to teach them craft. Most of the children would love to be involved with the holiday preparations, and while you don't want them to disturb you while you are busy in the kitchen or attending to some other work, you can ask the kids to make some nice home-made craft items. Here are some suggestions. If you have some more ideas, share it with us by leaving a comment at the end of the guide.

Making pilgrims hats: This is one of the most popular crafts which kids love to do. Take a Styrofoam cup and color it black. Cut a circular stripe of cardboard or thick paper to a size which will fit the rim of the cups. Glue it to the rim of the cup, and lo! The brim of your handsome hat is ready. Cut a small square from white paper and paste it above the brim. Decorate it with stripes, bead or ribbons or other colorful craft items if your want. Hats made only out of thick paper can also be made.

Making party invitations: If you are having a Thanksgiving feast, then your kids can help you with making the invitation cards. Give your children different colored construction paper and ask them to come up with ideas for the theme of the card. It could have a Turkey theme, or just a normal flowery patter. If you wish to keep your kids even more busy, you can ask them to make envelopes for the cards as well.

Thanksgiving history: A great way to encourage kids to know more about the history behind this festival, ask them to make a presentation about it. Ask them to identify the important stages in history that define the Thanksgiving holidays and let them draw it out from their imagination on large drawing boards. Before the feast, all guest can gather in the living room and see the kids display their art and tell the story of Thanksgiving. This is a great way for your kids to learn about the country's history.

Garland of Leaves: A simple and eye-catching craft activity is creating a garland of paper leaves to hang in your room during Thanksgiving. Take a sheet of colorful construction paper and cut out leaves the size of your palms from it. At the pointed end, punch a hole and interlace it with a green or black colored yarn. Now ask your guests and relatives to write one thing they are most thankful for, on those leaves and hang it as a Thanksgiving decoration in your living room.

Paper cup Turkeys: Bring out those disposable cups and put them to good use once again. Cover the cups in colorful construction paper or rather color them yourself if you have a water-color set. Glue the round pom-poms and draw eyes and beak on it. You can also cut out its beak on the construction paper and paste it on the Turkey-head. Now cut out feathers on the construction paper – shaped like a hand maybe – and color it in vibrant shades. Paste it behind the cup and your cup-turkey is ready. You can use it as a card holder as well.
