Top Tips On Roof Garden

Roof gardens if planned properly, can look exquisite. Though they have several restrictions as compared to lawns or backyard gardens, you can put your skills and efforts to test to create a little heaven on your roof and be proud of it. The nature of the roof, climate of your area and types of plants are the three basic factors that you need to consider for a roof garden.

Similarly, as it is directly exposed at a height, it faces the intense changes in weather and needs to be properly looked after. Here are some tips you need to consider when you plan your roof garden.

First consider the structure and slope of your roof. If it is a slanting one, you need to make small channels of gravels along with soil beds that will manage the water draining through the roof, particularly in rainy season. Also the types of plants vary. Horizontal roofs are comparatively more stable.

Second important factor is the climate in your area. If there is heavy rains or excess snow, delicate plants may wither off. So in these cases, more than your choice, the climate has a stronger edge. You need to go in for plants that would survive these changes in weather.

After you consider these factors, prepare the layouts of soil beds and support them by plywood or some support to prevent the washing off of the soil. In case of roof gardens, make sure you use fertile soils and also nutrients as and when required. This is because you are giving a limited area and thickness to the plants and hence need to care for their nourishment.

Make the soil layer around 8-10 inches thick. Also take special care when watering these beds. It needs to be done a little more tenderly as compared to normal gardens.

Avoid plants that develop very deeper roots or those that your area will not be able to sustain. Those are meant for the ground. Select those that look pretty, can survive weather changes and above all, give a fantastic look to you garden.
